A writer turned film maker, Manju Borah depicts the socio-cultural issues through celluloid. Born in Assam, North-East India, her work explores the indigenous culture and its impact on an individual and the community as a whole.

Manju’s first feature film was ‘Baibhab’ (1999). The film was awarded ‘Juries Special Mention’ in 47th National Film Festival 2000 and also Best film in Asia at the 6th Dhaka International Film Festival, 2000 apart from receiving Gollapudi Srinivas Award for Best Debut Director in Chennai in 1999. Then followed films like ‘Anya Ek Yatra’ (2001), ‘Akashitarar Kathare (2002)’. ‘Akashitora….’ Won her the National award for ‘Best Regional Feature Film’ and State award for ‘Best Director’ along with ‘The best Audience Award’ at the Dhaka International Film Festival in 2004. The film also received the National ‘Best Female Playback Singer’ award for its music director Tarali Sarma.  Both the following films ‘Laaz’ (2004) and ‘Joymati’ (2006) were selected for Indian Panorama and other festivals apart from receiving awards.

The filmmaker has a series of Documentaries, Tele films and Tele serials to her credit.  She is a proud recipient of Senior Fellowship from the Central Ministry of Culture for the year 2005-2007 on her work associated with Women oriented folklore of Assam.

Manju holds responsible positions at different cine organizations. To name a few, she is the Chairman of ‘Joint Advisory Committee Eastern India Motion Picture Association (EIMPA) and also a member of the script panel of National Film Development Corporation Limited (NFDC), Non-official member of General Body Jyoti Chitraban (Film Studio) Society, Working President Cine Art Society Assam and served as Non-official Member, Programme Advisory Committee All India Radio & DDK Guwahati and many others. She served as Jury Member of Feature Films, Indian Panorama, IFFI 2007, 55th National Film Award, 2007, 10th MAMI International Film Festival 2008 and 3rd Eye 7th Asian Film Festival Mumbai 2008. Her latest venture is Assamese feature film ‘AAI KOT NAI’ (MA) produced by Rajen Bora which is awarded Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration in 56th National Film Awards 2008.

She has been awarded Women of Excellence Award by FICCI for outstanding contribution in the field of Film & Entrepreneurship in the year 2009.
